Pray, reprimand us not, dear Amma
For stuffing this puppy in my school bag
So full of books.
My sister and I, we know it has life, it could’ve
suffocated…
Yes, Amma, all lives matter, be it ours
or this puppy’s,
All lives matter…
But those raucous ruffians, Amma,
Who tied a string of crackers
To the leg of an unsuspecting dog
Did not know that!
One of them distracted this puppy’s mother with a
biscuit
And pretentious petting,
While his two friends, Amma,
Tied a string of crackers to her hind leg
And lit it…
And not one of the passers-by admonished
them, Amma,
They just went passing by!
But my sister and I, we saw them, Amma,
And ran towards them, pleading with them to
stop.
By then, the crackers burst, the frightened mother
dog
Yelped in shock and ran away, leaving this poor
Whimpering puppy struggling for mercy
In the hands of those devils, Amma!
My sister and I, we had to assault them, Amma,
Though you’ve told us that fighting is not right…
We had to rescue this puppy, Amma,
And there was no other way to do that.
But the people, the ones who wouldn’t notice
The mother dog being harmed,
They admonished us, Amma,
They admonished us!
We didn’t give up, though.
We rescued him and brought him here, Amma,
because
You have not nurtured us to be insensitive
humans.
We were sensitive too, to his fear, Amma,
As we brought him here,
So we carried my bag in our arms,
With just a little opening for him to breathe,
And though we had to run
To get away from the wicked children,
We kept saying nice words to him, Amma.
We told him that he’ll be safe with us,
That you’ll love him, Amma, and nurture
him
As you do us, and will let us love him,
And play with him as we with each other.
As for those children, Amma, probably
they have
No one who loves them, as you do us…
They probably know not what kindness is,
As you show us...
So let us be kind to them, Amma, let us
love them
In our thoughts,
And pray for them, Amma, that they find
loving kindness,
For, none but one who is hurt deep within
Can ever hurt another, Amma, can ever
hurt another.
